Liberty Suffers Setback at Winthrop

The Liberty Lady Flames tennis squad dropped a 5-2 decision today against Big South foe, Winthrop. The loss drops Liberty to 16-4 on the season, including 6-2 in Big South action. Winthrop evens its record at 10-10 while improving to 6-1 in conference play. Following today's loss, the Lady Flames are now 0-20 all-time against the Eagles.
Liberty claimed the first point of the contest after defeating Winthrop in two of the three doubles sets. Maria Khval and Brittany Yang downed Alice Garcia and Mariana Humberg by a score of 8-6 from the No. 1 doubles position.
Emily Groeneveld and Belen Rivera clinched the doubles point for the Lady Flames after downing Monica Aguado and Camille Amrani, 8-2 from the No. 3 doubles slot.
Despite claiming the early 1-0 advantage, Liberty fell to Winthrop in five of the six singles matches. The lone singles win for the Lady Flames came from Groeneveld as the sophomore bested Amrani in straight sets, 6-4, 6-1 from the No. 6 spot, respectively.
"Today was not our day," stated head coach Jeff Maren. "Winthrop executed better than we did. We couldn't find the court with our shots, and you can't beat a good team unless you are consistent and believe that you are capable of finishing the point. We have work to do, but I still firmly believe in my team and know that we are capable of so much better."
Liberty will return to action tomorrow when the Lady Flames travel to Boiling Springs, N.C. to take on the Gardner-Webb Runnin' Bulldogs in Liberty's regular season Big South finale at noon.
