The Liberty Lady Flames bested Campbell by a score of 6-1 this afternoon to open Big South Action. Liberty has now notched a victory in its Big South opener for the fourth consecutive season.
With the victory, the Lady Flames improve to 4-6 on the season and 1-0 in conference action. Campbell falls to 5-3 on the year and 0-1 in Big South action.
The Lady Flames were quick to gain momentum for the day, sweeping the Camels in doubles action. Freshmen duo Rebekah Anderson and Aleksandra Panchenko breezed past Ewa Telenga and Georgia Dobell, 6-0. Anderson secured the sweep after charging the net and hitting a reverse drop shot out of the reach of Dobell.
Belen Rivera and Emily Groeneveld claimed the doubles point for the Lady Flames, defeating Georgina Segarra and Isabel Boada by a score of 6-2.
The highlight for Liberty in doubles action was the victory from Evangeline Crist and Valerie Thong. With the 6-3 triumph, Thong became the all-time leader in doubles victories in program history with her 79th career win, passing Jordan Jenkins.
The Lady Flames took a 2-0 advantage from the No. 2 singles spot after Ana Maria Ortiz was unable to finish. Crist bested Ortiz in the first set 6-1 and was ahead 4-1 in the second before Ortiz retired due to an injury.
Rivera then compiled a straight-set victory for the red and blue from the No. 3 singles spot. The Bolivia native bested Segarra, 6-1, 6-0 to extend the Liberty lead to three.
Campbell captured its first singles victory of the match from the No. 1 singles position. Irina Karangozishvili defeated Anna Dollar in straight sets, 6-4, 6-4 to pull the Camels back to within two.
Liberty regained momentum, winning each of the final three matches to solidify its Big South opening victory. Groeneveld clinched the match for the Lady Flames from the No. 5 singles spot after besting Isabel Boada in straight sets. The redshirt junior defeated Boada in the first set 6-4, before earning a 7-6(6-2) victory in the second set.
The final two matches extended into a third set, with Lauren Mabe and Mariely Hassey besting their respective opponents from the No. 4 and No. 6 singles slots.
"I was very proud of how the girls fought through adversity," stated head coach Jeff Maren. "Illness, cold weather and tough opponents forced us to be mentally tough today. We keep inching closer to our potential with matches like these."
Liberty returns to action on Saturday when the Lady Flames host UNC Asheville at noon. The contest is slated to be played at the Cook Tennis Center but may be moved indoor, weather pending.
