Late Miscue Gives Dolphins Win over Liberty
3/9/2009 12:00:00 AM | Softball
Tiffani Smith got out of the bottom of the first without allowing the Dolphins to score, despite having a runner in scoring position. Katie
Kelly led off with a single up the middle, and advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt by Shannon Monahan. But Kelly remained stranded, as Alexis Novak struck out swinging and Ashley Mora lined out to Smith.
The Liberty offense had a chance to break a scoreless tie in the top of the second. Keely McMillon ripped a single up the middle with one out to kick start the surge. Beth Bennett followed with a double deep to center field to put runners on second and third with one out. Freshman Kelly Strickland walked to load up the bases, but all three runners stayed put as Cassie Hendrix struck out swinging and Amber DePasquale flied out to left field.
The Lady Flames finally put themselves on the scoreboard in the top of the third, thanks to a single to left from freshman Danielle Howard. The hit drove in Jenny Law from second, who reached base on a free pass earlier in the frame.
But that would prove to be as much damage the Lady Flames could do in the inning, as McMillon flied out and Kaylee West struck out.
The Dolphins put two runners in scoring position in the bottom of the third inning, but stranded both when Morales struck out looking.
Bennett started off the fourth inning with an infield single and advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt by Strickland. Hendrix grounded out to second base for out number two in the inning. Amber DePasquale then belted a single up the middle, but Bennett was tagged out at home as the senior attempted to score from second.
Jacksonville tied the game up in the bottom of the fifth inning. After a walk, pinch runner Katarina Engler advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt. Engler then moved to third on a wild pitch by Smith, and scored when Shannon Monahan grounded out to second.
The sixth inning stayed scoreless, despite both Liberty and Jacksonville having runners in scoring position.
The top of the sixth saw a two-out single to left center field come off the bat of J'nae Jefferson, but she never crossed home, as Howard grounded out to end the half-inning.
Jacksonville first baseman Amber Mosely led off the bottom of the seventh with a single to center field, and advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt by Engler. Kelly came to the plate next, and her hard ground ball to second forced Hendrix to hurry the throw to first, which was wild. Moseley was able to score on the error, ending the game 2-1 in favor of the home team.
Sarah Sigrest (6-6) picked up the win for Jacksonville, allowing seven hits and striking out three in the complete game appearance. Smith (3-4) took the loss, scattering seven hits and striking out four over 6.1 innings.
With the win, the Dolphins improved to 10-12 on the season, while the Lady Flames fall to 4-10 in 2009. The second game of the doubleheader is scheduled to begin at 6:30 p.m.
