The Liberty Lady Flames tennis team competed at the Elon Fall Invitational on Friday afternoon, the team's first tournament of the 2016-17 season. On day one of competition, senior Emily Groeneveld scored a singles win, and the doubles team of sophomores Rebekah Anderson and Aleksandra Panchenko picked up a victory as well at the Jimmy Powell Tennis Center.
"Because this was our first tournament, we definitely had some rust we needed to get rid of," said assistant coach Giancarlo Lemmi. "On the other hand, we also saw some good things that we can start to build on starting tomorrow."
After dropping the first set to Winthrop's Alya Mourad in the Gold singles flight, Groeneveld rallied to win the match in three sets, 5-7, 6-2, 6-2. She will take on Wake Forest's Alexis Franco in the quarterfinals of the division on Saturday morning at 10:30 a.m.
In the Maroon doubles flight, Anderson and Panchenko bested Richmond's Brittany Boys and Lea Owens, 8-7. The pair will take on Emory's Bridget Harding and Katarina Su at 9 a.m. on Saturday morning in the semifinals.
Richmond's Gaby Rosales defeated Anderson, 6-3, 7-6 (2) earlier in the day in the Maroon singles flight. Richmond's Ana Ramirez topped Panchenko, 6-3, 6-1, in the Powell singles division.
Winthrop's Arianna Pepper defeated Liberty sophomore Audrey Brown, 6-1, 6-0, in Phoenix singles. Brown and Groeneveld were upended, 8-1, by Melissa Goodman and Elaine Vernoff in doubles.
Liberty begins day two of the Elon Fall Invitational tomorrow at 9 a.m.
