Liberty women's tennis sophomore Emily Groeneveld has been named the Big South Conference Choice Hotels Women's Tennis Player of the Week, as announced by the conference office, for matches played from March 9-15.
Emily Groeneveld finished this weekend with an untarnished 4-0 record including two wins in both doubles and singles play for the Lady Flames. Liberty defeated No. 71 Pacific on Tuesday by a score of 5-2 in Stockton, Calif. Groeneveld teamed up with Mariely Hassey to clinch the doubles point to begin the match after defeating Regina Suarez and Antonel Santeusanio by a score of 6-4. The Florida native then clinched the match from the No. 5 singles slot as she bested Gergana Boncheva, 6-3, 6-4 for the 4-1 lead and the upset over the Tigers.
Against Cal Poly on Thursday in San Luis Obispo, Calif. Groeneveld paired up with Hassey to defeat Molly Reed and Sayaka Tsugai, 7-6 (4) from the No. 3 doubles slot. Groeneveld and Hassey once again clinched the doubles point for the Lady Flames. The transfer sophomore then defeated Dane Joubert in straight sets from the No. 5 singles slot, 6-1, 6-4.
Groeneveld looks to assist the Lady Flames in earning their 13th victory of the season on Saturday when they take on Big South foe, Charleston Southern. Liberty has a chance to improve to 3-0 in conference play with a victory on Saturday. The contest is slated to begin at 11 a.m. at the Hershey-Esbenshade Tennis Courts
