The Liberty Lady Flames tennis squad bested College of Charleston on Sunday afternoon. The Lady Flames defeated the Cougars by the final score of 4-2.
With the victory, the Lady Flames improve to 12-9 overall on the season. College of Charleston falls to 14-11 following the loss.
The Lady Flames notched the doubles point en route to the two-point victory. Liberty recorded wins from the No. 1 and No. 2 doubles position, leaving the third doubles match unfinished after the point was clinched.
Anna Dollar and Maria Khval picked up the first doubles victory for Liberty, defeating Brooke McAmis and Helena Nyikos, 6-1. Dollar and Khval's victory marked their sixth consecutive doubles win and 15th on the season, tying Evangeline Crist and Valerie Thong.
Crist and Thong notched their 15th doubles victory after besting Mara Argyriou and Katherine Schofield, 6-2. The duo's victory marked their 24th of the season as Crist and Thong pile onto the program record of team wins in a single season.
Schofield evened the match at one apiece for the Cougars after upending Dollar in straight sets from the No. 2 singles slot, 6-3, 6-2.
Liberty quickly regained the lead when Thong delivered a straight-set victory from the No. 6 singles slot. The California senior defeated Diana Colen, 6-4, 6-2 to provide the Lady Flames with the 2-1 edge.
Mariely Hassey doubled the Liberty lead to 3-1 after besting Sarah Jane Jones in straight sets from the No. 5 singles slot, 6-3, 6-3.
College of Charleston cut the deficit in half when Liza Fieldsend defeated Khval in three sets 5-7, 6-1, 7-6(7-1).
With the Cougars mounting a comeback against Liberty, Crist quickly responded with a straight-set victory to extend the lead back to two and clinch the match 4-2 in favor of the Lady Flames. Crist bested McAmis from the No. 3 singles slot, 7-6(7-3), 6-2 to claim the victory.
"We certainly played better today against a very good College of Charleston team," stated head coach Jeff Maren. "Our mental game was intact and we did a great job of playing smarter tennis. This weekend was great preparation for us heading into the next two weeks. Our level of doubles appears to have returned. We've had a strange patch of subpar play the past few weeks, but today we regrouped and played smarter and more consistent."
The Lady Flames close out their regular season on Tuesday with a 2 p.m. contest against Longwood in Farmville, Va. With a victory on Tuesday, Liberty would clinch at least a share of the Big South regular season title as well as the No. 1 seed in the upcoming Big South Women's Tennis Championship in Lynchburg, Va.
