Host VMI staked itself to a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the opening inning. With one out, second baseman Justin Hess lined a triple into the right field corner. Left fielder Graham Sullivan followed with a sacrifice fly to right field to score Hess with the game's first run.
The Keydets added to their advantage in the second inning. Center fielder Rob Dickinson doubled into the left-center field gap with one out and scored on a two-out double by catcher Andrew Montegue, two batters later.
Held off the scoreboard through five innings, Liberty pushed across a run in the top of the sixth inning. With one out, second baseman Zach Haley singled up the middle and moved all the way to third base, when Montegue's throw on a sacrifice bunt by center fielder Ian Parmley sailed wide of first base and down the right field line. Right fielder Michael Robertson followed with a single up the middle to drive in Haley, trimming the Keydet edge to 2-1.
