AZUSA, Calif. – On the day when decathlon great Brandon Hoskins was announced as a Liberty Athletics Hall of Famer, the Flames' current group of multi-event athletes excelled at the Bryan Clay Multis. Gabriel Willis racked up 3,997 points during Thursday's five events to take the Group B lead, while Patasha Bryan tallied her best-ever heptathlon day one score, 3,249.
Willis' 3,997 points actually has the redshirt senior ahead of Hoskins' day one pace (3,900 points) when he set the Liberty decathlon record of 7,800 at the 2008 Texas Relays.
Willis set personal bests in three disciplines on the day, including the 100 (10.78), long jump (23-4.5) and 400 (50.47). His 100 time ranks No. 3 all-time for the Flames within a decathlon.
Willis also won the Group B decathlon high jump with a 6-8.25 clearance. That effort sits No. 3 on Liberty's all-time decathlon chart.
Bryan's 3,249 points have her in 10th place in Group A, the top seeded section of the heptathlon. Like Willis, she is currently ahead of program record pace. Danielle McNaney finished with 3,236 points on day one at the 2005 Penn Relays, when she went on to post her Liberty standard of 5,504.
Bryan's top event of the day was the high jump, where the redshirt senior made it over a personal-best 5-7.25. That is third best all-time within a Liberty heptathlon and ninth on the Lady Flames' outdoor high jump chart.
Earlier in the day, Jake Nicholson (seventh, 3,732 points) and Samuel O'Regan (11th, 3,343) competed in decathlon's Group C. Nicholson recorded personal bests in the long jump (22-3.75) and shot put (44-7.5) during his decathlon debut, and the redshirt freshman also won his 400 heat in 49.41.
O'Regan notched his best-ever day one point total on the strength of three event bests (100 – 11.49, long jump – 22-1.5 and 400 – 51.83).
Paige Greenhagel's day one personal-best 2,962 points put her in fifth place in the heptathlon's Group C. She finished off her opening day with consecutive personal bests in the shot put (37-3.25) and 200 (25.57).
