Senior Josh Wilson of the Liberty men’s tennis program earned his seventh career ASUN Player of the Week honor, it was announced by the league office on Wednesday afternoon.
Wilson’s honor is his first of the season and the Flames’ first of the spring 2023 campaign. Wilson matches his former teammate, Nicaise Muamba, for most all-time ASUN Player of the Week awards in program history with seven. Prior to today, Wilson’s last player of the week award came on March 8, 2022.
“Josh is one of our captains and a huge leader for this team,” said Liberty Men’s Tennis Associate Head Coach Trevor Foshey. “He’s committed to making the most of his last semester as a Flame, and he showed that off last weekend with some strong performances. Go Flames!”
Wilson finished with a 2-2 overall record (1-1 No. 1 singles, 1-1 No. 1 doubles) at 2023 ITA Kickoff Weekend in matches at No. 5 Kentucky and versus Washington at the Boone Tennis Center in Lexington, Ky. The senior topped the UW Huskies’ Han-Chih Lin 6-2, 6-2 at No. 1 singles on Saturday. Wilson also teamed up with Christiaan Worst to win 7-5 over Cesar Bouchelaghem and Dzianis Zharyn in the No. 1 doubles contest.
On Friday versus the No. 5-ranked Wildcats, Wilson took 2021 ITA National Player of the Year Liam Draxl to three sets on court one, with Draxl ultimately prevailing 6-2, 3-6, 6-2.
Wilson and Worst lead all Liberty doubles units with 11 triumphs on the year. In singles, he has nine overall victories and is 3-2 in the No. 1 position so far this spring.
Wilson and Liberty (2-3, 1-0 ASUN) will be back in action at William & Mary (1-1) on Saturday afternoon. Match time between the Flames and Tribe is 1 p.m. at the McCormack-Nagelsen Tennis Center in Williamsburg, Va.
