Western Michigan took the first two sets from Liberty during Saturday evening's match at the Golden Dome Invitational in South Bend, Ind. The Lady Flames made a valiant comeback attempt, but the Broncos came away with a 3-1 (28-26, 25-15, 17-25, 25-16) victory.
Three Liberty attackers—Nicki Scripko (So., OH/RS, Fayetteville, N.C.), Chelaine McCarty (Jr., MB, Houston, Ala.) and Jessica Nelson (R-Sr., OH, Tokyo, Japan)—finished with 10 or more kills, but the Lady Flames dropped their fourth consecutive decision. Liberty is now 8-4 on the season. Meanwhile, Michelle Moore spearheaded Western Michigan's balanced attack with 13 kills, helping the Broncos improve to 8-2.
The first set was the most competitive of the evening, as the teams traded the lead three times and were tied on seven occasions. Western Michigan of the Mid-American Conference (MAC) pulled out a 28-26 triumph in Liberty's longest set of the season (in terms of total points), thanks to the attacking efficiency of Jaime Gotham. She hit .857 with six kills during the stanza, contributing to her team's .382 attack percentage. For Liberty, sophomores Scripko and Karyl Bacon (OH/DS, Temecula, Calif.) finished with four kills each.
Despite McCarty's quartet of kills, the Broncos were in control throughout set two. They scored seven of the first nine points, on their way to a 25-15 decision. Western Michigan posted its highest attack percentage of the match during the second set, .424, paced by Moore's five kills.
Trailing two sets to none, Liberty head coach Shane Pinder shook up his lineup for the third set. And the Lady Flames responded in fine fashion. Right-side hitter Brittany Pacella (R-Jr., Reading, Pa.) posted two blocks during a 6-0 burst which lifted Liberty to a 13-6 edge, which they would never relinquish. Pacella then put the finishing touches on a 25-17 win with a kill, wrapping up a two-kill, five-dig, two-block set for the redshirt junior.
Scripko led all players with six kills during set three, but Liberty's defense was the biggest story. The Lady Flames tallied 26 digs and four blocks, limiting the Broncos' attack percentage to .043. Bacon, playing libero, contributed a set-high nine digs for Liberty.
In set four, Western Michigan claimed an early edge, after Gotham recorded two kills and a block during a 4-0 surge. The Broncos owned the lead the rest of the way, with Moore's solo block accounting for the final point of their 25-16 win. Western Michigan had four blocks during the final stanza, three of which were assisted by Allyson Doyle. On the Liberty side of the net, McCarty came up with a set-high four kills.
Scripko finished the contest with a match-best 16 kills, to go along with eight digs and a season-high four blocks. Her efforts at the net helped Liberty finish even in the blocking category, with both teams recording seven rejections.
McCarty and Nelson tallied 10 kills apiece, and Nelson completed her first double-double of 2008 with a season-best and team-high 20 digs. Bacon also posted a season-high dig total, hustling her way to 16 digs versus the Broncos.
Setter Kallie Corbin (Jr., Beaverton, Ore.) accumulated some solid statistics for the Lady Flames. She notched her third double-double of the season, consisting of 41 assists and 12 digs. Corbin also hit .333 with a trio of kills, going over the .300 plateau for the fifth match in a row.
Moore was one of three Western Michigan netters to record double-doubles on Saturday, adding 15 digs to her kill total. Doyle chipped in with 11 kills and 15 digs, while setter Jillian Mitchell summed 48 assists and a dozen digs. Caitlin Strimel contributed a match-best 25 digs.
The Lady Flames will play UC Irvine in their third and final match of the Golden Dome Invitational, Sunday at noon at the Joyce Center. The contest will be Liberty's final tune-up, prior to the start of Big South Conference play on Friday.
