Throughout the month of August, LibertyFlames.com will run a series of interviews with each of Liberty's position coaches, getting further insight in each position leading into the 2015 season.
LibertyFlames.com continues its position previews today with a look at the Flames safeties, a position that underwent some changes during August training camp.
On Wednesday, Head Coach Turner Gill released his first updated depth chart of the year, which included a new "Spur" position on the defensive side of the line. Both of the players listed in the "Spur" position are now safeties on Liberty's updated roster.
With the new "Spur" position, Liberty has three safeties filling the starting roles with the trio having a combined one start among the group of players.
Liberty is looking to replace two-time All-America safety Jacob Hagen, a player who finished last year ranked seventh in the final voting for the national Defensive Player of the Year award. Hagen, who led Liberty in tackles with 108 stops and eight interceptions, is now on the St. Louis Rams' preseason training camp roster.
Avery James is listed as the starter at strong safety, while Alpha Jalloh is slotted to start next to him at free safety. Corbin Jackson, a redshirt freshman, is the listed starter at the new "Spur" position.
James was one of several true freshman to see playing time in 2014, finishing the season having played in 13 games with 19 tackles and an interception. Jalloh, a transfer from Stevenson University, finished his first year with the Flames one tackle behind James with 18 stops and an interception.
The remaining six players currently on Liberty's rosters listed as a safety have yet to see playing time in a game for the Flames.
Four are true freshmen (Jordan Cabral, Rion Davis, Cameron Jones and Jon Magloire), while Cam Jackson practiced with the team last year during his redshirt season. Jordan Williams was added to Liberty's roster during the spring after playing two seasons of football at Edinboro University in 2012 and 2013 as a wide receiver.
