Sam Chelanga's national runner-up performance in the 5K, Friday evening at the 2010 NCAA Division I Indoor Track & Field Championships, helped the Liberty men's track & field team record its fourth top 30 finish at the meet in the last five seasons. The Flames ended up tying for 26th place with eight team points, in the two-day meet held at the Randal Tyson Track Center.
Liberty, which improved three spots in the final team standings from the 2009 meet, shared the No. 26 spot with Alabama, Baylor, Memphis, Nebraska, Rice and Wisconsin. The impressive showing caps a successful 2009-10 indoor season which saw the Flames win their 13th straight Big South title and tie for third place at the IC4A meet.
Florida won the 2010 men's national team title with 57 points. Oregon and Texas A&M, the 2009 NCAA men's indoor and outdoor team champions, respectively, tied for second with 44 points apiece.
The Flames' best-ever team finish at the NCAA Division I Indoor Track & Field Championships was a tie for 23rd in 2006.
Chelanga (R-Jr., Nairobi, Kenya) earned his second consecutive second-place finish in the 5K at this meet, crossing the line right behind Northern Arizona's David McNeill in a time of 13:37.01. Chelanga is now a seven-time All-American.
ESPN2 will air 90 minutes of meet coverage March 17 at 1:30 p.m. The broadcast will likely include highlights from the 5K battle between Chelanga and McNeill.
Liberty's next meet will be its second outdoor event of the season, next weekend's Shamrock Invitational in Conway, S.C. The three-day event, hosted by Coastal Carolina, will begin Thursday at noon, with the start of the decathlon.
