
Liberty Edged by Richmond in Overtime, 13-12

After scoring five straight goals at the end of regulation to force overtime, host Liberty fell 13-12 to Richmond in the extra session, Saturday afternoon at the Liberty Lacrosse Field.
The Lady Flames mounted a furious comeback after trailing 12-7 to Richmond with less than seven minutes to play, tying the game at 12-12 with just over a minute left in regulation. However, Richmond junior midfielder Kendall Duffy scored the game-winning goal with 51 seconds left in the first overtime, sending the visitors home with a 13-12 triumph.
Liberty drops to 0-2 on the season. Saturday's overtime contest was the Lady Flames' first since 2017. Richmond stays perfect with the win, improving to 3-0.      Â

Turning Point
Liberty fell behind 12-7 following a Duffy goal with 8:46 to play in the game. The Lady Flames answered with five goals over the final 6:49 regulation to knot the game at 12-all. During that stretch, midfielder Mackenzie Lehman and attacker Brooke Bryan scored twice each, while attacker Cami Merkel added a goal. Lehman's goal, a free-position tally, came with 1:11 remaining in regulation.
Both teams generated quality chances in overtime, with Richmond's fifth and final shot of the extra session proving to be the game winner. Duffy's game-winning marker, her third goal of the day, was a shot that found the left side of the cage past Liberty goalkeeper Jennifer Soriero.
First Half Summary
• An evenly-played first 30 minutes saw Richmond take a narrow 5-4 lead into the half. The Spiders' Arden Tierney scored two goals in the closing minutes of the frame to give the visitors the one-goal lead.
• Liberty's Jordan Baerga, the reigning ASUN Player of the Week, scored her sixth goal of the season with 6:52 to go in the opening half. Eleven seconds later (6:41 mark) midfielder Andrea Colavito put the Lady Flames ahead 4-3 with her first marker of the 2022 campaign.
• Liberty outshot Richmond 18-14 in the opening stanza, while both teams scooped up 10 ground balls. The Spiders held a 6-5 edge in draw controls.
Second Half and Overtime Summary
• Liberty attempted 17 of its 42 shots for the game in the fourth quarter. The Lady Flames had trailed the Spiders through three quarters before outscoring Richmond 6-2 in the final 15 minutes of regulation.

Her 28 free-position goals match a program record, which she now shares with former Lady Flames Sam Struss (2012-15) and Carly White (2017-21).
• Redshirt senior defender Hannah Quast celebrated her birthday today with a career best six ground balls and matched a career high with three caused turnovers. Soriero tied for the team lead with six ground balls as well.
• Lehman and Lizzy Ferguson led the way with five draw controls apiece for the Lady Flames. Ferguson scored her first goal of the season this afternoon.
• The Lady Flames drop to 6-7 all-time in home openers.
• Richmond is 8-0 all-time versus Liberty. Each of the last two meetings between the two squads in Lynchburg have gone to the Spiders by one goal (other: March 2, 2019, 10-9 Richmond win).
• Liberty's last overtime game prior to today was nearly five years ago. The Lady Flames fell to Campbell 12-11 in that match (April 11, 2017) at the Liberty Lacrosse Field.
