Liberty senior Erika Jackson recorded her best-ever opening day of the heptathlon, scoring 2,987 points on Wednesday at the 89th Nike Clyde Littlefield Texas Relays at Mike A. Myers Stadium.
Jackson currently sits in 25th place through Wednesday's quartet of events. The Lynchburg native is 24 points ahead of her pace when she won the 2015 Big South heptathlon with a career-best 4,869 points.
Jackson's day included her best-ever 100 hurdles (14.79) and shot put (35-8.75) marks within a heptathlon competition. She then closed the afternoon with a personal-best 200 time of 25.49, aided by a gusty tailwind which was prevalent throughout the day.
Classmate Riley Brandon scored 2,118 points on Wednesday and ranks 29th in the competition. Competing in her home state, Brandon notched season-best marks in the 100 hurdles (15.49), high jump (4-11.5) and 200 (27.04). However, the 2014 Big South heptathlon champion failed to record a mark in the shot put, limiting her overall score.
Brandon and Jackson will be the first Liberty athletes to compete on day two of the Texas Relays, beginning the heptathlon long jump at noon Eastern on Thursday.
