The Liberty men's tennis squad (5-4) will travel to Texas this weekend for a match against on Abilene Christian (3-9), before continuing their Texas run next week with a trio of matches against Lone Star State opponents. Saturday's match against Wildcats is set to begin at 11 a.m. ET. at Eager Tennis Pavilion.
Liberty enters the contest having recently beaten Big South opponent Longwood to claim the Flames' Big South opener. Liberty had not seen action in nearly a month due to inclement weather. After dropping three hard fought contests in Florida, the Flames jumped back on the winning side of things to gather momentum heading into this weekend.
Liberty is led by freshman Diego Castano, who boasts a 6-2 singles record. Sophomore transfer Sam Matheson and junior Egon Samaai are tied for the second most wins on the squad with five. Castano also paces the squad in doubles play with a 6-3 mark, while Dillon Segur is close behind with five doubles wins.
Saturday's meeting against Abilene Christian will mark the first time that these two squads have ever squared off on the court.
The Wildcats enter the contest with a 3-9 record with a chance to improve on that mark tomorrow, as they take on Incarnate Word and Texas-Pan American. Abilene Christian enters the weekend losers of five of its last six matches. Most recently the Wildcats fell to Xavier by a score of 5-2 in a neutral site match in Dallas, Texas.
Following Saturday's match, Liberty returns to action Tuesday when the Flames take on Incarnate Word at 10 a.m. ET., followed by St. Mary's at 3 p.m. ET. Both matches will be played at the UTSA Tennis Center in San Antonio, Texas. Liberty will conclude its Texas trip with a match against host, Texas at San Antonio, on Thursday at 3 p.m. ET.
