Liberty freshman guard Seth Curry has been named the Big South Conference New Balance Men's Basketball Player of the Week for games played Jan. 12-18, as announced by the league office.
The award is Curry's second player of the week honor this year and third weekly award. Curry was named Choice Hotels Big South Player of the Week on Dec. 1, marking the first time that a true freshman earned the weekly award since the institution of the Big South Freshman of the Week award for the 1990-91 season. Kennedy Okafor from Maryland-Baltimore County won the award as a redshirt freshman on Dec. 15, 1997. A week later, on Dec. 8, Curry nabbed freshmen of the week honors.
This award marks the first time a Liberty player has been named Big South Player of the Week multiple times in a season since Leo Lightbourne earned the distinction twice during the 2004-05 season.
Curry averaged 25.0 points in two games last week, helping Liberty to a 2-0 record. He scored a team-high 15 points in a 68-55 victory over Coastal Carolina, then poured in a career-high 35 points on 10-of-15 shooting in the Flames' 91-80 defeat of first-place VMI. Curry scored 20 points in the first half at VMI and finished the day 4-of-6 from three-point range and a perfect 11-of-11 from the free throw line. Liberty's victory was in front of a record capacity crowd (5,029) inside VMI's Cameron Hall. On the week, Curry shot 53.6 percent from the floor (15-of-28), 94.1 percent from the charity stripe (16-of-17) and averaged 4.5 rebounds and 2.5 steals.
Curry currently leads the Flames by averaging 20.8 points per game, a mark that tops the nation's freshmen scorers and ranks No. 20 nationally, while being the only freshmen in the top 50 nationally.
Liberty returns to the hardwood Tuesday night at High Point. Tip-off is set for 7 p.m., inside the Millis Athletic Center.
