
Curry and Sanders Sweep BSC Weekly Awards

Liberty freshman guard Seth Curry has been named the Big South Conference Choice Hotels Men's Basketball Player of the Week, while guard Jesse Sanders has been named the New Balance Freshman of the Week for games played Nov. 24-30, as announced by the league office.
Curry (Charlotte, N.C.) averaged 23.0 points, 4.0 rebounds and shot .519 percent from the floor in leading the Flames to a 3-0 record last week, including Liberty's first win over an ACC school since 1998 and a CAA program since 2002. He scored a game-high 26 points in the Flames' 86-82 win at Virginia, dropped in 24 points and grabbed eight rebounds vs. Coker, and scored 21 points in Liberty's double overtime win over William & Mary. Curry, who was named MVP of the Liberty Thanksgiving Classic, scored 13 of his 21 points after regulation on 6-of-7 shooting in the win over the Tribe. His trey with 18.1 seconds left in the first overtime forced a second extra session. For the week, Curry was 27-of-52 from the floor and 10-of-24 from long range (41.7 percent) while regularly facing double teams and a box-and-one.
Sanders (Sugar Land, Texas) ran the point in the Flames' three wins last week. At Virginia, he handed out eight assists, grabbed four rebounds and did not commit a turnover in Liberty's victory over the Cavaliers. He scored 15 points on 7-of-8 shooting vs. Coker, before tallying 11 points, eight rebounds and four steals in Liberty's double overtime win over William & Mary. Sanders pulled down five offensive rebounds against the Tribe to help the Flames to 23 second- chance points, and his two rebounds and a steal in the second overtime helped Liberty post a 9-0 run to close out the game. For the week, Sanders went 11-of-15 from the field (73.3 percent), 5-of-6 from the free throw line (83.3 percent) and averaged 9.3 points, 5.0 rebounds and 3.7 assists.
This marks the first time since Feb. 9, 2004 where Liberty has had a players honored as both Big South Player of the Week and Freshman of the Week. That week, Gabe Martin shared the Player of the Week honors with Danny Gathings of High Point, while Larry Blair was named Freshman of the Week. The last Freshman of the Week honoree Liberty had was Jeremy Anderson on Feb. 4 of this year, while Alex McLean was the Flames' last Player of the Week, which was awarded on Dec. 3, 2007.
Liberty returns to action tonight against intra-state foe George Mason. Tip-off is set for 7 p.m. inside the Vines Center.
