Just days after being named Liberty’s starting quarterback entering the 2022 season, Charlie Brewer has started to garner national attention.
The former Baylor and Utah starting quarterback has been named to the 2022 Johnny Unitas Golden Arm Award watch list.
The Golden Arm Award annually recognizes the top senior or upperclassman quarterback set to graduate with their class.
The semifinalists, finalists, and award recipients are selected by the distinguished Johnny Unitas Golden Arm Selection Committee, a group of prominent college football journalists, commentators, announcers, and former players. Candidates are chosen based on player performance on-and-off the field.
The 2022 award winner will be presented the Golden Arm Award trophy by The Johnny Unitas Educational Foundation President, John Unitas, Jr., at the Golden Arm Award banquet and celebration at the Four Seasons Hotel in Baltimore, Md., on Wednesday, December 7, 2022.
This year’s selection is the largest group of active quarterbacks in the history of the Johnny Unitas Golden Arm Award, representing 76 schools around the nation. All 10 FBS conferences as well as a football independent are represented on the list.
This is the second time in Brewer’s career he has been named to the Johnny Unitas Golden Arm Award watch list. After leading Baylor to an appearance in the 2020 Sugar Bowl and 11-3 record, Brewer was named to the watch list prior to the 2020 season.
During his four-year playing career at Baylor (2017-20), Brewer led the Bears with 9,700 passing yards and 65 touchdowns. He is the second player in Baylor history with 10,000 career total yards (9,700 passing and 1,039 rushing). The quarterback also completed 63.5 percent of his pass attempts at Baylor (828-of-1,304) in 44 career games.
The native of Austin, Texas, has been named to multiple preseason award watch lists during his playing career: 2020 Davey O’Brien Award, 2020 Maxwell Award, 2020 Manning Award, 2020 Johnny Unitas Golden Arm Award and the 2019 Maxwell Award watch list.
Following his career at Baylor, Brewer transferred to Utah for the 2021 season. Brewer played in the first three games of the season where he completed 48-of-79 passing attempts for 484 yards and three touchdowns.
