EUGENE, Ore. – Liberty's Paola Bueno made history at the NCAA Division I Outdoor Track & Field Championships on Thursday at Hayward Field, becoming the Lady Flames' first thrower ever to earn multiple All-America honors. Bueno placed 16th in the women's hammer to become a second team All-American for the second year in a row.
Bueno's first throw of the competition measured 212-6 and stood up for the 16th and final All-America position in the field. A year ago, Bueno had placed 11th in the event with a lesser mark (211-5), but the competition proved to be much deeper this time around.
CUSA boasted a pair of women's hammer All-Americans for the second consecutive season, with Kennesaw State's Kali Terza coming in 13th.
CUSA's third-place finisher, Bueno closes out her junior campaign having pushed the program record to 215-7 at the NCAA Division I East First Rounds meet.
Not long after the women's hammer wrapped up, Allie Zealand made her NCAA national meet debut in the women's 1,500 semifinals. One of two freshmen in the 24-member field, Zealand found herself in a tactical heat which covered the first 800 in approximately 2:22. Zealand covered the final lap in 64.18, but her 4:15.88 final clocking ended up 11th in the heat and 23rd overall.
The first Lady Flame to contest the women's 1,500 at this meet since her mother (Heather Sagan Zealand) did so in 2002, Zealand finishes her freshman year with a pair of CUSA titles (indoor mile and outdoor 1,500). She also owns a trio of program records already, including the indoor 3K (9:07.33), indoor distance medley relay (11:21.25) and outdoor 1,500 (4:09.76).
