
Strong Attack Leads Liberty to 2-0 Win over Winthrop

Gabrielle Farrell and Isabella Habuda each netted goals, as a relentless attack from the Liberty Lady Flames led to a 2-0 victory over the Winthrop Eagles, 2-0, Wednesday afternoon in a Big South Conference match at Osborne Stadium.
Farrell scored her team-leading sixth goal of the season early in the first half and Habuda struck for her fifth goal of the year early in the second half. With her goal, Farrell is now tied for second in the Big South in the statistical category.
Habuda assisted on Farrell's goal, while defender Sami Santos recorded her first assist of the year on Habuda's marker.
Liberty moves to 3-2 in Big South play and evens its overall mark at 7-7. The Lady Flames have won their last four meetings with the Eagles. Winthrop drops to 0-4 in conference and 3-9 overall.
Liberty's strong attack gave the Lady Flames control play throughout the contest, outshooting the Eagles, 19-4. Eight of Liberty's shots were on goal.
After a shot by Winthrop during the second minute of play, Liberty went on the attack. The Lady Flames' pressure yielded the game's first goal at 10:58. Habuda jumped in front of a clearing attempt near the right sideline and reached the top right corner of the 18-yard box, pushed the ball into its center. Farrell ran onto the ball and struck a low shot into the right side of the net for a 1-0 Liberty edge.
The Lady Flames continued its strong attack during the opening minutes of the second half. A shot from Liberty's Sierra Lam forced a diving save by Duncan during the 47th minute, resulting in a corner kick. Bailey Gillmore's kick was cleared out of the box by the Eagles' defense. Santos corralled the loose clearing attempt and lofted the ball from 20 yards out on the left side of the field towards the far post. Habuda was there to head it in to give the Lady Flames what would prove to be the 2-0 final score.
Liberty controlled play the rest of the way, allowing Winthrop to only get one shot attempt during the 88th minute, which sailed high.
Liberty's Holly Van Noord made one save in the contest to record her fourth shutout of the season and 36th of her career, extending her program record. Winthrop's Duncan recorded six saves in the contest.
Liberty held a 7-2 advantage in corner kicks to go along with its shot advantage.
Winners of three of its last four matches, Liberty travels to Buies Creek, N.C., for a Big South contest against the Campbell Camels, Saturday evening. Match time at Eakes Athletic Complex is scheduled for 7 p.m.
