Klugh Breaks Liberty, Big South 5K Records
2/11/2011 12:00:00 AM | Track and Field
Junior Jennifer Klugh made a bit of history Friday evening at the Flotrack Husky Classic. Her 5K time of 16:56.14 broke both the Liberty and Big South Conference records for the event.
Taking advantage of the fast 307-meter track at Dempsey Indoor, Klugh became the first Big South Conference women's 5K runner ever to break the 17:00 barrier indoors. She cut 14 seconds off of her previous 5K personal-best time while winning her heat by 12 ticks over Air Force's Katherine Ward.
The Buckeye State native also shaved seven seconds from the existing Liberty and Big South Conference records. Carol Jefferson had set both marks on March 3, 2007, when she ran a 17:03.23 at the ECAC Division I Indoor Track & Field Championships in Boston.
To illustrate the depth and quality of the distance fields at the Flotrack Husky Classic, Klugh was one of 46 women's runners to post a sub-17:00 5K on Friday.
The redshirt senior duo of Josh Edmonds and Evans Kigen competed in the men's 5K on Friday. Kigen ran a 14:18.98 in his first 5K of the season, qualifying for the IC4A meet. Meanwhile, Edmonds recorded his second sub-14:30 performance this year, crossing the line in 14:26.55.
Sam Chelanga will compete in the men's 3K at the Flotrack Husky Classic Saturday at approximately 8:20 p.m. Eastern, with his race set to be video streamed live on Flotrack.org. He will be aiming for the NCAA automatic qualifying standard of 7:54.50.
