Liberty bounced back from its loss to Gardner-Webb with arguably its best defensive effort in program history, Monday evening at Winthrop. The Lady Flames set program records for fewest points allowed and lowest opponent field goal percentage in a 52-18 victory over the Eagles at the Winthrop Coliseum.
Liberty limited Winthrop to just five made field goals and 11.9 percent (5-of-42) field goal shooting on the night, improving its overall record to 18-5 and its Big South mark to 8-2.
Meanwhile, the Eagles drop to 10-15 overall and 4-7 in conference play. Winthrop also lost for just the third time in 11 home contests this season.
The Lady Flames kept the home team off the scoreboard for the first 5:56, forcing the Eagles to miss their first nine field goal attempts. As a result, Liberty was able to build a 10-0 lead by the first media timeout.
Shortly thereafter, Avery Warley reached a career milestone. Her putback hoop with 13:41 before halftime, made the redshirt sophomore the 50th player in program history to score 500 career points.
Another Winthrop scoring drought, this one lasting 6:15, enabled Liberty to extend its lead to 19-2. Dymond Morgan's triple from the left wing at 10:53 capped the Lady Flames' 9-0 surge.
Liberty did not score its next points for 7:06, but the Eagles managed only six points in the meantime. Jessica Fansler made a pair of free throws with 3:59 on the first-half clock, cutting Winthrop's deficit to 19-8.
The Lady Flames owned a 23-10 halftime advantage, after limiting its opponent to 10 first-half points for the second time this season. Liberty also held Presbyterian College to 10 markers before the break, Jan. 16 at the Vines Center.
Liberty shot 40.9 percent (9-of-22) from the field during the first 20 minutes, while holding Winthrop to just 12 percent (3-of-25). Both teams connected on all of their free throws in the opening stanza, as the Lady Flames were three-for-three and the Eagles went four-for-four.
The Lady Flames owned a slight, 19-16 rebounding edge before intermission and outscored their hosts in the paint, 12-4. Turnovers plagued both squads, as Liberty committed 13 opening-half miscues and Winthrop had a dozen.
Danika Dale came off the bench to pace all scorers in the first half, tallying six points in her 12 minutes of work. Warley and Devon Brown chipped in four points each, with Warley leading all players in both rebounds (7) and blocked shots (3).
Fansler's four points led the Eagles, and Shanice Cole grabbed a team-high four boards.
Liberty emerged from the locker room to score the second half's first eight points. Brown accounted for six of the points, including a layup at the 15:51 mark which bolstered the Lady Flames' edge to 31-10.
Kathi Ryska converted an old-fashioned three-point play on the Eagles' next possession, trimming the gap to 31-13. However, that was the last time Winthrop got closer than 20 points down, and the Eagles made only one field goal during the remaining 15:27.
The final score was 52-18, as Liberty came close to an all-time NCAA Division I record. TCU owns the mark for fewest points in allowed in a game between two Division I women's basketball teams, limiting Texas Southern to 16 markers on Dec. 30, 2002.
The Lady Flames did not shoot the ball exceptionally well, hitting 39.2 percent (20-of-51) of its field goals. However, 30 of Liberty's 52 points came from inside the paint.
Winthrop missed all 14 of its three-point field goal attempts and committed 28 turnovers, which led to 19 Liberty points.
The Lady Flames won the rebounding battle for the 15th straight game, 42-32, including 18 offensive caroms.
Brown paced all players with 15 points, 11 of which came during the second half. Dale chipped in 11 points, scoring in double figures for the second time in her last three games.
Both of Liberty's starting post players made significant contributions, as Kylee Beecher notched nine points and Warley collected a game-high eight rebounds. The duo combined for five blocked shots, including three by Warley.
On the perimeter, Rachel McLeod and LaKendra Washington each recorded a trio of the Lady Flames' dozen steals.
Ryska's five points led the way for Winthrop, while Chanel White pulled down a team-high five boards.
Liberty will return home for its next two games, beginning with a Saturday matinee versus Coastal Carolina. Tipoff is set for 4 p.m. versus the Chanticleers, and the contest will open the final basketball doubleheader of the 2009-10 season at the Vines Center. Liberty's men's basketball team will host High Point in the nightcap at 7 p.m.
The Liberty-Coastal Carolina tilt will serve as the Lady Flames' annual WBCA Pink Zone game, and the Lady Flames' coaching staff will coach in bare feet to promote the Samaritan's Feet charity. Finally, the ZOOperstars will perform during halftime of both games on Saturday.
The Lady Flames will attempt to complete a season sweep of the Chanticleers, after using a 24-2 game-ending run to claim a 57-38 win at Coastal Carolina on Jan. 25. Liberty has won 32 consecutive matchups against the Chanticleers.
Winthrop will not play again for a week, as the Eagles' next contest will be played at Gardner-Webb, Feb. 22 at 7 p.m.
