Freshman Ryan Bell and redshirt sophomore Elliot Galeone got the 2009 outdoor track & field season off to a strong start, Friday afternoon. The duo swept the top two places in the men's javelin competition at the Coastal Carolina/Asics Invitational in Conway, S.C., and both are now ranked among top five performers in program history.
Bell (New Wilmington, Pa.) won the event by nearly 12 feet over Galeone (White Hall, Md.), uncorking a throw of 212-11. Bell's effort makes him Liberty's first qualifier for the NCAA Division I East Regional Track & Field Championships in May. After just one competition in a Liberty uniform, Bell already ranks No. 2 on the Flames' all-time performance list. Shad Bolen's school javelin record of 216-1 has stood since March 18, 1989.
Galeone nearly hit the regional qualifying standard as well, stretching the tape to 201-0 to earn a runner-up finish behind his teammate. The Maryland native recorded an IC4A qualifier and claimed the No. 5 position on Liberty's all-time javelin performance list.
Multi-event athlete Daniel Newell (R-Sr., Roanoke, Va.) gave the Flames three top 10 finishers in the field of 30 javelin entrants. Newell took ninth place with his best throw of 153-10.
Liberty's other top 10 finisher on a light Friday of action was another senior thrower, Andrew Bartels (Grantham, Pa.). The Big South indoor shot put champion made a successful outdoor season debut in the hammer throw. Bartels' 154-5 heave left him in seventh place.
A full day of action is scheduled on Saturday at the Coastal Carolina/Asics Invitational. Things will get underway at 9 a.m., with the men's discus and women's high jump.
