Liberty junior Jaime Watson claimed a runner-up finish in the women's 800-meter run, Saturday at the Murray Neely Invitational. Her performance was one of the team's chief highlights on a gloomy day at North Carolina A&T's Irwin Belk Track.
Watson (Ravenna, Mich.) converted a blazing early pace into a 2:12.51 clocking for 800 meters, while making her outdoor season debut. Her second-place finish was followed up by teammate Ashley Teer's (Jr., Abbotsford, British Columbia) fifth-place effort. Teer ran a season-best 2:23.65 in the process.
One other Liberty athlete, freshman Krystle Matthews (Chesapeake, Va.), placed second on Saturday. The multi-event athlete threw the javelin 109-10 to capture runner-up honors.
Fellow freshman Mia Aghaji (Chester, Va.) came away with fifth place in the triple jump, after landing at 37-4.5.
Lady Flame pole vaulters Emily Funderburke (Jr., Fredericksburg, Va.) and Erin Hudson (So., Whitacre, Va.) braved the unfavorable vaulting conditions to claim third and fourth place, respectively. Funderburke cleared 9-5, while Hudson topped out at 8-5.25.
Senior Charlene Hibbert (Mississauga, Ontario) competed in several events at North Carolina A&T. Her best showing came in the 200-meter dash, where she took eighth place with a 24.87 clocking.
On the men's side, Liberty's top individual finisher was senior Kevin Correa (Forestville, Calif.) in the 800-meter run. A week after breaking 1:58 for the first time, Correa finished 10th in 1:58.60.
Freshman Clarence Powell (Marianna, Fla.) was also coming off a stellar outing at the Liberty Collegiate Invitational, where he broke the school triple jump record. This week, Powell extended his personal best in the long jump to 21-5.5, which was good for 14th place.
Liberty will travel across town for its final tune-up for the Big South Conference Outdoor Track & Field Championships, next Saturday. The Flames and Lady Flames will compete in the Lynchburg Track & Field Classic, hosted by Lynchburg College.
