Several members of the Liberty University track and field team competed in the Liberty Twilight Qualifier held at the Matthes-Hopkins Track Complex on Thursday in preparation for the upcoming IC4A/ECAC and NCAA Championships.

On the women’s side of the event, Piper Newby won the women’s 3000 meter steeplechase with a time of 11:17.64, while Brenda Tolsma claimed victory in the women’s hammer throw with a distance of 46.14 meters.

Kena Butts (1.75 meters) and Arlene Zelinskas (1.70 meters) finished first and second, respectively, in the women’s high jump, while Zelinskas also finished second in the women’s 100 meter hurdles with a time of 13.78.

Andrea Beckles and Stephanie Walker finished second and third, respectively, in the women’s 100 meters with times of 12.12 and 12.26, while Rebekah Ricksecker finished second in the women’s 800 meters with a time of 2:12.90.

Charlene Hibbert and Jenn Ward finished second and third, respectively, in the women’s long jump with distances of 5.27 and 5.16 meters, while Carol Jefferson finished second in the women’s 1,500 meters with a time of 4:44.23.

On the men’s side of the home event, Brandon Hoskins won the men’s javelin with a distance of 57.73 meters, while David Hunt (16.18.17) won the men’s 5,000 meters and Drew Ponder (9:33.37) won the men’s 3,000 meter steeplechase.

Liberty also had three other competitors record third place finishes as Phil Leineweber (47.98/400 meters), David Cooper (13.36 meters/shot put) and Eric Lundy (13.79 meters/triple jump) all placed third in their respective events.

The Flames will travel to Princeton, N.J. to participate in the IC4A/ECAC Championships, hosted by Princeton on May 11-14.
