Charlottesville, Va.

Erica Scripa closed her freshman cross country campaign with a season-best time of 19:31.5, Friday afternoon at the Cavalier Open. Her effort highlighted the Lady Flames’ performance at the small invitational, contested at Panorama Farms in Charlottesville, Va.

Only 44 women’s runners, including one Liberty sophomore and four freshmen, competed in the 5K race, as most teams rested their top runners for next weekend’s NCAA regional meets. No team scores were kept.

The diminutive Scripa (Bel Air, Md.), making only her second appearance in a Liberty uniform, sliced 36 seconds off her time from the Hagan Stone Classic on Oct. 3. She ended up as the Lady Flames’ top finisher and 17th overall.

Redshirt sophomore Alicia Guridy (Tappahannock, Va.) also broke 20 minutes for the second time this season, clocking a 19:55.9 for 22nd place.

Liberty’s other three competitors were all freshmen, led by Taylor Bowles (Noblesville, Ind.), who ran 20:05.3 for 26th place. Amy Passauer (Ashburn, Va.) was 37th in 21:02.9, while Lyndi Fielitz (Walden, N.Y.) claimed 40th place in 21:14.0.

The Flames and Lady Flames will return to action Nov. 14, when they travel to Louisville, Ky., for the NCAA Division I Southeast Regional Cross Country Championships. The meet, which will determine the qualifiers for the NCAA Division I Cross Country Championship, will begin with the men’s 10K race at 10 a.m. The women’s 6K championship will follow at 11:15 a.m., at E.P. Tom Sawyer State Park.
