| Freshman Carra Coy and the Lady Flames will tip off the 2009-10 season one week from today, when Winston-Salem State visits the Vines Center. |
Seven seniors graduated from the 2008-09 Liberty women's basketball team, which went 24-9 and captured the program's 12th Big South title in 13 seasons. As a result, Lady Flame fans will see a lot of new faces on the court this year, including freshman forward Carra Coy. LibertyFlames.com will provide a brief introduction of the Lady Flames' newcomers, leading up to the season opener versus Winston-Salem State on Nov. 13.
Carra Coy, a 6-6 freshman post player, is the Lady Flames' tallest player since 6-8 Katie Feenstra graduated in 2005. She averaged a double-double during each of her two seasons at Northwood Academy, located just outside Charleston, S.C., helping her team claim back-to-back regional championships. As a senior, Coy posted 16.0 ppg, 12.0 rpg and 4.0 bpg.
Coy also earned numerous recognitions for her work off the court. In 2009, she garnered the Tried by Fire award, given to the most Christ-like individual at Northwood Academy. She graduated with high honors, after maintaining a 4.5 GPA.
2009-10 Outlook: Last season, Liberty ranked No. 2 nationally in rebounding margin, but four seniors standing 6-2 or taller graduated from that team. Coy's size and rebounding ability should help the Lady Flames continue their tradition of being a strong team on the boards in 2009-10. She is also expected to block and alter many shots in the paint this season.
From the Head Coach: "Carra is continually improving daily and will have a major impact on our team's success. Her stature and presence cannot be overlooked."

What is your favorite Bible verse and why?
Philippians 3:12-14
"Not that I have already obtained all this, or have already been made perfect, but I press on to take hold of that for which Christ Jesus took hold of me. Brothers, I do not consider myself yet to have taken hold of it. But one thing I do: Forgetting what is behind and straining toward what is ahead, I press on toward the goal to win the prize for which God has called me heavenward in Christ Jesus."
These three verses are some of my favorite because they remind me of my purpose and keep me focused on the goal of my life. That's to be a champion for Christ in everything I do.
