Following one of the better individual performances in program history, the Big South Conference has named Max McKay the Men’s Golfer of the Week, honoring his efforts at the Xavier Invitational earlier this week.

McKay (Fr., Jacksonville, Fla.) fired a final-round, six-under par 66 to finish the two-day event in a share of second place along with Penn State’s Kevin Foley. Both golfers completed the 54-hole event with an aggregate 14-under par 202, as McKay opened the Xavier-hosted event with a pair of four-under par rounds of 68.

McKay’s three-round 202 is tied for the best 54-hole total in program history, as the rookie’s score matched Andrew Turner, who fired a 202 at the JMU Invitational in 2005. His final round 66 on the par-72 Club at Renaissance Golf Course in Fort Myers, Fla., is tied for the fifth-best, 18-hole total in program history, matching a pair of 66s fired by Turner.

As a team, Liberty finished the event tied for fourth with a team-total, 15-under par 849 (282-282-285). The Flames ended their fall schedule with the second-lowest, 54-hole total in program history, besting Liberty’s 860 at the Rutherford Intercollegiate in 2003.

McKay is the second Liberty golfer to be named the conference’s golfer of the week, as Robert Karlsson took home the honors on Oct. 16 after finishing tied for sixth at the Davidson College Invitational. Liberty is one of two Big South programs to have multiple Big South weekly honorees this fall, joining Coastal Carolina who has had a pair of golfers recognized also.

The freshman’s final performance of the fall season helped drop his season stroke average by nearly two strokes. He came into the event with a 75.1 stroke average through his first nine rounds of collegiate golf and came out of the two-day event with a 73.2 stroke average thanks to three sub-par rounds.

McKay and the Flames will return to action just after the New Year when the team travels to Wallace, N.C., to participate in the UNC Wilmington River Landing Intercollegiate. The two-day, 54-hole event will be contested on Jan. 2 and 3 at the River Landing Golf Club.
