Today, LibertyFlames.com continues its weekly question-and-answer series with the Lady Flames volleyball team, designed to give fans a unique look at the two-time defending Big South champions. Redshirt junior right-side hitter/middle blocker Kirstyn Sanders is this week’s featured Lady Flame.
Kirstyn Sanders has split time between the right-side hitter and middle blocker positions for the Lady Flames this season. She has notched 66 kills and ranks third on the team with 43 blocks. Arguably the best match of her career came on Sept. 19, when she hit .348 with 10 kills and five blocks against ACC power Duke.
Sanders, a three-time Big South Presidential Honor Roll member, is the third member of her family to play sports at Liberty. Her father, Craig, played basketball for the Flames from 1977 to 1980. Meanwhile, older sister Alysson was also a part of the Liberty volleyball team, from 2004 to 2007.
What is the most exciting thing you did this summer?
I got to see my mom's side of the family at my cousin’s wedding in Minnesota. We don't get together much, but when we do it's very fun! I love you Petersons!
If you could add a match to this year’s schedule, which team would you want to play?
Notre Dame. I have a great friend who sets for their team, Jamel Nichols, and I love seeing her and her family. I would also love another chance to play them and beat them.
What is your favorite volleyball memory?
Besides all the awesome Liberty volleyball family memories I have when we're off the court, our first Big South championship was my most favorite memory on the court. That season was challenging in so many aspects, and we had to fight ourselves and the reigning champions. Every ounce of sweat and tears was worth the feeling of the last point we played to earn that ring.
How many text messages do you send per month?
Are you trying to reveal how social I am? Or how addicted I am to my cell phone? I talk to my mom and sister a lot!
Who is your best friend currently playing collegiate volleyball for another team, and who do they play for?
Emily Pany at Indiana (Pa.)
What is your favorite vacation spot?
Wherever my family is. I don't always have to have something to do. As long as I'm with people I love, I know I'll have fun!
What is your favorite Bible verse and why?
Hebrews 10:35-39
“So do not throw away your confidence; it will be richly rewarded. You need to persevere so that when you have done the will of God, you will receive what he has promised. For in just a very little while, ‘He who is coming will come and will not delay. But my righteous one will live by faith. And if he shrinks back, I will not be pleased with him.’ But we are not of those who shrink back and are destroyed, but of those who believe and are saved.”
When I start to lose my confidence in volleyball or school or anything, this verse helps me remember that God did not make us to be afraid and "shrink back." He wants us to have faith in Him and keep our confidence in Him.
What is your favorite food?
My coach will probably kill me for this, but anything that isn't good for you is probably my favorite. Double cheeseburgers from the dollar menu at McDonald’s and La Carreta are my favorites!
My dream beach volleyball partner would be …
My sister Alysson. We'd have so much fun together!
Do you have any pre-match habits/rituals, and what are they?
After seeing Maddy, our trainer, and signing mini volleyballs and posters to hand out to fans, I like to listen to music from my iPod and goof off with my team in the locker room.
The most impressive thing about Coach Pinder is …
Coach has shown his heart to me in more ways than one since I have been here. He's pushed me on the court and he's been a part of my life in a way that he can step into second dad mode if he needs to. He's given me unbelievable advice and helped me learn life lessons I will never forget. The most impressive thing about Coach is that he has the ability to be an AWESOME volleyball coach, but at the drop of a hat will do anything for his players.
What is the best advice you have ever received, and who gave it to you?
It's those roller coasters that make us the strong, confident, fearless women that we become...God will use every one of those little buggers! Up, Down , Up, Down, Up, Down. - My momma.
