Robert Karlsson finished the first day of the Renaissance Invitational in a three-way tie for first place.

Looking to finish up their fall season on a strong note, Liberty’s golf team finds itself in fourth place after two rounds at the Renaissance Invitational, while the Flames Robert Karlsson is in a three-way tie atop the leaderboard after play on Sunday.

Karlsson was one of two golfers to card a seven-under par 65 in the morning on the par-72, 7,026-yard Club at Renaissance golf course, as he shared the midway lead with Campbell’s Matt Moot.

Karlsson and Moot both followed with four-under par 68 rounds in the afternoon, allowing Indiana’ Alex Martin to fire the low round of the day, an eight-under par 64, to catch the pair for the overall lead at the end of the day. The trio of golfers finished the two rounds with an aggregate 11-under-par 133.

Moot’s score catapulted his squad to the top of the leaderboard, as the Fighting Camels hold a slim one-stroke edge over Indiana. Campbell finished the first 36 holes in the lead with a 26-under-par 550 (271-279), followed one stroke behind by the Hoosier’s 25-under-par 551 (280-271).

Penn State is eight shots back of Campbell, as the Nittany Lions fired an 18-under-par 558 (287-271) on the day, followed by Liberty’s 12-under par 564 (282-282).

Besides Karlsson’s 11-under par, Max McKay helped the Flames claim hold of fourth place, as the freshman finds himself in a tie for fifth place at eight-under par 136, after firing consecutive four-under par 68 rounds.

Chris Watters was next on Liberty’s team card, but had a 12-stroke difference than McKay, as Watters carded a four-over par 148 (75-73) on the 36-hole day for a share of 42nd place.

Rounding out Liberty’s golfers were Preston Dembowiak, who is tied for 44th, with a five-over par 149 (76-73) and Stephen Dooley, who is tied for 48th place, with a six-over par 150 (74-76). Jordan Frye, who is competing as an individual, is tied for 31st place, as the sophomore finished the opening day with a one-over par 145 (71-74).

Karlsson, who fired the lowest round of his collegiate career with the seven-under par opening round, finds himself in a position where he can capture his third collegiate individual title, as he enters the final 18 holes of play in a share of the overall lead.

McKay and the remainder of head coach Jeff Thomas’ squad will look help to chase down Campbell and Indiana on the final day, when the 12-team field returns to the Club at Renaissance golf course, tomorrow morning, for the event’s final 18 holes of play.
