Road Win Pushes Flames Back into both Polls

FCS Coaches Poll
Liberty’s seven-point road victory over Charleston Southern, last Saturday, not only pushed the Flames’ Big South winning streak to 13-straight games, but it also propelled the program back into both national FCS polls.
Liberty, who is 5-2 on the season and 2-0 in Big South play, remained No. 23 in the Sports Network polls, while climbing dramatically to No. 24 in the latest FCS Coaches ranking.
This marks the second-straight week the Flames have been listed at No. 23 in the Sports Network poll.
In this week’s listing, the Flames captured 666 votes, finishing just behind No. 22 Jacksonville State, as the 4-3 Gamecocks received 689 votes. Liberty ranks ahead of No. 24 Colgate, who is 7-1 and took home 509 votes, and No. 25 Prairie View A&M, who is 5-1 and received 269 votes.
Liberty, along with Prairie View A&M, were the two newcomers to the FCS Coaches Poll, this week. Last week, the Flames received 29 votes and were the 29th program in the listing voted upon by a selection of the nation’s FCS coaches.
The Flames received 67 votes to nab the No. 24 ranking, while Prairie View A&M tied with Colgate, as both received 64 votes and are tied at No. 25 in this week’s listing. Massachusetts is listed ahead of the Flames at No. 23 with 116 votes.
Earlier this year, the Flames were listed in both rankings heading into their matchup with James Madison on Sept. 26. Liberty was ranked No. 24 in the FCS Coaches Poll and No. 25 in the Sports Network listing prior to the in-state battle with the Dukes.
The Flames have been ranked inside the Top 25 five out of nine weeks in 2009 and in 13 out of the last 18 national polls, dating back to Sept. 8 of last year.
The top six programs in both the Sports Network and FCS Coaches polls are identical, beginning with defending national FCS coach Richmond (7-0) in the top spot.
The Spiders are followed by No. 2 Montana (7-0), No. 3 Southern Illinois (6-1), No. 4 Villanova (7-1), No. 5 William & Mary (6-1) and No. 6 Elon (6-1).
Liberty will put its national ranking and Big South record conference winning streak on the line this Saturday, when they welcome Presbyterian to Williams Stadium. Kickoff for the contest is slated for 3:30 p.m., and marks the first of two straight on-campus games to close to the home portion of the Flames regular-season slate.
