100 Hurdles/Pole Vault Results

Liberty freshman Olivia Charnuski raced to a third-place finish in the women’s 100-meter hurdles final, while classmate Cody Fridgen took fifth in the men’s pole vault, Saturday morning at the Canadian Junior Track & Field Championships. The meet is being contested at UPEI Canada Games Place in Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island.

Charnuski (Elmira, Ontario), who finished in the runner-up spot at this meet in 2008, clocked a 14.44 on Saturday to claim third place. She was edged at the finish line by race winner Ashlea Maddex’s time of 14.27 and the 14.35 effort of second-place finisher Shona Dunkley.

Charnuski wraps up an extended freshman track & field season, which saw her place third in the 100 hurdles at the Big South Outdoor Track & Field Championships and 10th in the same event at the Canadian Track & Field Championships. She also set the Liberty freshman 100-meter hurdles record (14.18) at the ECAC meet and helped the Lady Flames shatter the school shuttle hurdles standard (59.10) at the historic Penn Relays.

Meanwhile, Fridgen (Sarasota, Fla.) topped out at 14-5.25 for fifth place in the men’s pole vault competition. He was successful on his first attempt at both 13-11.25 and 14-5.25, before bowing out at 14-9. Lane Britnell won the national junior title, as he was the only vaulter to clear 15-1 on Saturday.

Fridgen’s rookie campaign was highlighted by his performance in the Big South outdoor pole vault, where he was the top freshman and placed third overall. He also reached a personal-best 15-3 to finish second at the Liberty Twilight Qualifier.
