Games against 10 2008 NCAA Regional teams, including a contest at NCAA World Series participant North Carolina, and a 27-game conference slate are just some of the highlights of the 2009 Liberty Flames baseball schedule, released today by Liberty Coach Jim Toman.

Liberty will face North Carolina, which made its third consecutive College World Series appearance last season, in Chapel Hill, N.C, on Feb. 25. It will be the first meeting between the two programs since 2003.

The Flames will also meet NCAA Regional squads Ole Miss, North Carolina State, and Virginia in single contests, while squaring off with James Madison and Big South foe, Coastal Carolina, a 2008 Super Regional participant, three times.

Toman’s Flames will open their season against SEC member Ole Miss at the Coca-Cola Classic in Mobile, Ala., on Feb. 20. Also during the weekend tournament, Liberty will play host South Alabama twice, and meet Mercer on the Classic’s last day, Feb. 22.

In addition to meeting North Carolina, North Carolina State, Virginia and Ole Miss, the Flames will continue its home-and-home series with Virginia Tech. With the series, Liberty will play eight games versus teams from the ACC and SEC, two of the top conferences in the country.

The Flames will play 27 Big South conference games, as Gardner-Webb and Presbyterian join the league this season. Liberty will host Charleston Southern, Presbyterian, UNC Asheville, Winthrop and Radford, while visiting High Point, VMI, Gardner-Webb and Coastal Carolina for three-game conference series in 2009. The Flames will begin Big South play, by welcoming Charleston Southern to Worthington Stadium on March 13, and conclude their conference and regular-season slate with a three-game home series against Radford, beginning May 14.

The 2009 Big South Baseball Championship will be hosted by UNC Asheville, May 20-24, at McCormick Field in Asheville, N.C. The conference champion will receive the Big South’s automatic bid to the 2009 NCAA Tournament. Regional play in the 2009 tournament is scheduled for May 29-June 1, at sites to be determined.
