The Liberty men's and women's track and field teams not only swept the Big South Conference outdoor team titles, but they also both captured Big South Team Sportsmanship Awards.

Liberty has earned the Big South Conference’s Team Sportsmanship Awards for both men’s and women’s outdoor track and field, it was announced today by Big South Commissioner Kyle B. Kallander. 

Coach Brant Tolsma’s Flames and Lady Flames each won team titles at the Big South Outdoor Track & Field Championships, on their home track in April. The men’s team received three first-place votes and 13 total points, finishing ahead of 2006 sportsmanship award winner VMI, which garnered a pair of first-place votes and 10 points. Radford was third in the men’s voting with nine points. 

On the women’s side, Liberty accumulated four first-place votes and 14 points. VMI again finished second, totaling two first-place votes and 10 total points. High Point placed third with seven points. 

The team awards are voted on by Big South student-athletes and are awarded at the end of each competitive season. Teams cannot vote for themselves. 

Liberty has now won a conference-high seven Big South Team Sportsmanship Awards during the current academic year, including all six men’s and women’s track & field/cross country team honors. The Liberty volleyball team also won the award this past season.
