Former Liberty Soccer Player Burklo Signs Professional Contract
January 1, 2007
Lynchburg, Va.
Former Liberty Flames soccer player Jonathan Burklo has signed a contract to play for Atlantis FC of the Ykkonen, the second-highest professional division in Finland.
"I'm excited for Jon and his family. He has worked extremely hard to make this dream a reality and deserves the opportunity to play professional soccer,” stated Liberty head coach Jeff Alder. “His time with the Cincinnati Kings this past summer allowed him to cut his teeth in a pro environment, but I feel the situation in Finland will provide a great environment to impact and influence other people through soccer. Our staff is proud of his growth as a player and a person during the past five years.”
Burklo, a native of Tampa, Fla., completed his Liberty career in 2005 and graduated in May of 2006 with a degree in biology. During his four seasons with the Flames, he proved to be very versatile as he played as a forward, a midfielder and a defender. In 70 career games, Burklo netted seven goals and assisted on 13 others. He capped his time at Liberty by being named to the 2005 Big South All-Conference second team. He started all 16 games as a defender during his senior campaign and served as one of two team captains for the Flames.
This past year, Burklo played professionally with the Cincinnati Kings of the United Soccer League.
